AUSTIN, Texas — Freshman guard Tre Johnson recorded a game-high 24 points, but Texas (15-10, 4-8 SEC) dropped a 103-80 decision to No. 2/1 Alabama (21-3, 10-1 SEC) on Tuesday night inside Moody Center. The Crimson Tide became the fourth different team to visit Moody Center this year that has reached at least the No. 2 spot in The AP poll, joining UConn, Auburn and Tennessee.
Johnson converted 9-of-17 field goals, including 4-of-8 from three-point range, and tallied four assists and three rebounds in 37 minutes. Graduate Jayson Kent posted a season-high 19 points (6-9 FG, 2-4 threes, 5-6 FT), three rebounds and one blocked shot in a season-high 25 minutes, and graduate Julian Larry added 10 points (4-5 FG, 1-1 threes) and a season-high three steals in 23 minutes.
Texas jumped out to a 7-2 cushion following a Tramon Mark layup at the 17:36 mark. The Crimson Tide answered with eight-straight points to take a 10-7 lead after a Labaron Philon three-pointer with 15:11 left. A Mark free throw gave the Longhorns a 13-12 advantage at the 13:43 mark, before Alabama used an 11-2 spurt over the next three-and-a-half minutes to grab a 23-15 lead following a Philon layup with 10:07 remaining. A Larry layup trimmed the deficit to 35-28 at the 3:29 mark, but the Crimson Tide closed the half on a 14-3 run to take a 49-31 advantage into the break.
A Kent tip-in cut the margin to 58-43 at the 15:02 mark, but that was as close as the Longhorns could get the rest of the way. After a Ze’Rik Onyema tip-in cut the deficit to 69-53 with 11:17 left, Alabama went on an 11-4 spurt over the next three-plus minutes to seal the outcome and increase its cushion to 80-57 following a Jarin Stevenson three-pointer at the 7:49 mark.
Texas returns to the court when it hosts No. 15/18 Kentucky on Saturday, Feb. 15. Tip is set for 7 p.m. Central at Moody Center, and the game will be televised nationally by ESPN.
