Army running back Kanye Udoh wasted no time in announcing his transfer decision following a season ending loss to Navy on Saturday. The ball carrier will find a new home in 2025 after spending his first two seasons in West Point.

He exploited a service academy transfer rule in making that decision. Had he not announced those intentions now, the likelihood of his leaving the Black Knights would’ve dipped significantly.

Army, Navy, and Air Force are three of the least active college football programs when it comes to the transfer portal. The schools typically don’t accept incoming prospects. Those who choose to leave the schools, meanwhile, must do so before starting their junior years.

Army football players sign contracts tying them to the school for their junior and senior seasons. The penalty for breaking that deal isn’t insignificant, often resulting in a six-figure fine.

Kanye Udoh is a true sophomore. He still has the ability to transfer freely without incurring punishment. It’s a big loss for the Black Knights, who won the AAC in this year’s 11-2 campaign.

As a freshman, the running back totaled 524 yards and a touchdown. He followed it up with a 1,117-yard sophomore season where he reached the endzone 10 times.

Udoh initially chose the Black Knights over Power Four offers from Boston College, Maryland, West Virginia, Nebraska, Rutgers, and Syracuse. He noted the value of an Army degree in his reasoning.

“What West Point can do for you after football, after you graduate, I mean, you go to West Point, that degree is very prestigious,” he said upon committing to the program. “It can really get you any opportunity that you really want.”

It seems his priority has shifted after his monster sophomore campaign. The opportunity to further his football career has taken precedent. Kanye Udoh should have plenty of interest from outside suitors. It will be interesting to see where he winds up.
