KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – Courage, kindness and bravery are all words used to describe civil rights activist, Ruby Bridges. On Thursday, students at Quindaro Elementary followed in her footsteps by walking around the school’s track.
The Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day is celebrated across the country. Students at Quindaro Elementary are walking for the second consecutive year.
Students designed posters and signs to not only celebrate her impact on civil rights but also spread messages of unity.
For reference, Ruby Bridges was the first girl to integrate Elementary Schools in New Orleans back in 1960. That was 64 years ago, but the faculty at Quindaro Elementary believes students can still follow in her footsteps.
“People need to learn how to handle situations peacefully and not just fly off the handle,” organizer, Candace Birdsong said. “The way things are happening, the crime that’s going on in our neighborhoods, people need to realize that there is another way to handle your interactions with someone.”
While students walked in KCK, Bridges gave a speech at Washburn University in Topeka. Several students at Quindaro Elementary were able to make the trip and listen to her speech.
