Timothée Chalamet pulled an upset win for Outstanding Male Actor for A Complete Unknown and Conclave shocked as well with an Outstanding Ensemble Cast in a Motion Picture win at the 2025 SAG Awards Sunday night in Los Angeles.
The wins made an already tight race for the 2025 Oscars all the more unpredictable.
“I wasn’t expecting this at all … truly,” said Chalamet upon accepting his SAG Award for playing music icon Bob Dylan. The actor’s fellow SAG Award nominee Adrien Brody has all but swept Best Actor honors for his turn in The Brutalist during awards season, with wins at the Golden Globes (Drama), Critics Choice Awards and British Academy of Film and Television Arts Awards.
A SAG Award win for Brody would have made his quest for his second Best Actor Oscar all but a formality. Instead, the win gave Chalamet his first opportunity to thank the legendary troubadour he brought to life on a major awards stage.
Chalamet called Dylan a “true American hero” during his acceptance speech, adding that it was the “honor of a lifetime playing him.”
Demi Moore won the Outstanding Female Actor SAG Award for The Substance, while Zoe Saldaña and Kieran Culkin took the Supporting Female and Male Actor trophies for their roles in Emilia Pérez and A Real Pain, respectively.
Coupled with its recent Best Feature Film win at the BAFTAs, Conclave’s victory for Outstanding Acting Ensemble—the equivalent of a Best Picture award—adds a whole new wrinkle to the Best Picture Oscars contest.
Before the SAG Awards, Anora was riding a huge wave of momentum after taking the Best Picture trophy at the CCAs and the Producers Guild Awards and a Best Director win for Sean Baker at the Directors Guild of America Awards.
Although it didn’t face off against the same competitors it did at the SAG Awards, Anora also won the Best Feature trophy at this weekend’s Film Independent Spirit Awards.
On the television side, Shōgun also capped off its awards season domination with four SAG Award wins. Previously, the series had all but swept the Primetime Emmy Awards, Golden Globes and CCAs.
For the SAG Awards, Shōgun won in all of the categories it was nominated in Television Drama category: Outstanding Performance by an Acting Ensemble in a Drama, Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor for Hiroyuki Sanada, Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor for Anna Sawai and Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble.
The series was nominated for a fifth SAG Award—for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor for Tadanobu Asano—who was defeated by his co-star Sanada.
In the Television Comedy race, Only Murders in the Building won SAG Awards for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble and Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor for Martin Short.
Jean Smart took the Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor Award for Hacks. Short and Smart, as it turns out, were the only two major winners who were absent from the SAG Awards ceremony.
The Penguin’s Colin Farrell and Baby Reindeer’s Jessica Gunning took the Outstanding Male and Female Actor SAG awards, respectively, in the Television Movie or Limited Series category.
