Seen as the missing piece the Jets needed to contend for a Super Bowl, Rodgers arrived to the Big Apple with plenty of fanfare in 2023, but his debut campaign with Gang Green only lasted four snaps before an Achilles tear ended his season.
Rodgers worked diligently to return in 2024 but struggled to find his footing as the Jets limped out to a 2-3 start, leading to head coach Robert Saleh’s firing. The difficulties continued after Saleh’s departure, and even the acquisition of Rodgers’ old pal Adams couldn’t save their season.
It remains to be seen how Rodgers will be viewed on the open market. A handful of teams are in need of help under center, but at 41 years old, he’s nothing more than an experienced bridge quarterback at this stage.
Rodgers’ contract could also present a hurdle for the Jets and any interested suitor. According to Over The Cap, a pre-June 1 move (trade or release) would incur a $49 million hit in dead cap for the Jets. They’d save $9.5 million in cap space if they designated a trade or release as a post-June 1 move.
Adams could remain in New York if he agrees to a new deal, per Rapoport, but with Rodgers moving on, it’s expected Adams will do the same with a preference to find a new home on the West Coast.
Plenty remains to be sorted out for Rodgers and the Jets, but Sunday’s report has all but ensured his time in New York will soon be finished.
