Angela Alsobrooks praises mentor Kamala Harris at Democratic National Convention – Baltimore Sun Emergency USA

CHICAGO — U.S. Senate candidate Angela Alsobrooks on Tuesday night described Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris — her friend and mentor — as a tough former prosecutor who “has reminded us that we don’t need to fear anything.”

Alsobrooks, the Prince George’s County executive and also a former prosecutor, said she has known Harris for 14 years. Her fiery speech to the Democratic National Convention was, in effect, a character reference focusing on the vice president’s ability to stand up to criminals.

“Hear me, Kamala Harris knows how to keep criminals off the streets. And come November, with your help, she’ll keep one out of the Oval Office,” Alsobrooks said, referring to Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, who awaits sentencing on his conviction in a New York hush-money trial.

Alsobrooks is running against Republican former Gov. Larry Hogan for the seat held by the retiring Sen. Ben Cardin, a Democrat.

The Maryland convention delegation, positioned near the stage, chanted “Angela, Angela” before and after her speech. Members wore Alsobrooks campaign stickers handed out by the Maryland Democratic Party.

With Maryland considered a battleground in the race for U.S. Senate control, Alsobrooks secured a prime speaking spot on the convention stage. Former President Barack Obama was the evening’s featured keynote speaker.

Alsobrooks said Harris had been a “super bad district attorney” in San Francisco before she was California attorney general and then a U.S. senator and vice president. She said she had modeled one of Harris’ programs to combat recidivism.

“Kamala has reminded us that we don’t need to fear anything — not the future and certainly not that man,” she said, referring to Trump. “This is our moment to leave Donald Trump where he belongs — in America’s past.”

The race between Alsobrooks and Hogan has attracted national interest — and national money.

Super PAC dollars are flowing to the state as never before, perhaps rivaling the influence of the candidates’ own campaigns or national parties. Super PACs can raise unlimited sums from individuals, corporations and unions.

Both parties are watching the race closely.

Democrats hold a 51-49 voting majority in the U.S. Senate. Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia, a longtime Democrat who is now an independent, is retiring, and Democrats must defend a handful of seats in November in states that Democratic President Joe Biden narrowly won in 2020.

Alsobrooks would become Maryland’s first Black senator. Harris would be first woman to become president.

“I am honored to be delivering a keynote address tonight at the Democratic National Convention,” Alsobrooks said in a prepared statement before the speech. “I have known Kamala Harris for fourteen years, and I look forward to sharing exactly why she is going to make an incredible President of the United States.”

Marylanders, she said, “deserve a future we can all be proud of — one where our freedoms are protected, and our families can thrive.”

Harris came to Prince George’s County recently and urged Marylanders to vote for Alsobrooks.
